Charlene M. Centanni

Charlene M. Centanni, 81 of Elgin passed away Monday, Sept. 10, 2012 at Provena St. Joseph Hospital, Elgin. She was born November 29, 1930 in Elgin the daughter of Clifford and Marie Wright Pond. She was a graduate of St. Mary’s Grade School, Elgin and St. Edward High School, Elgin. She attended Northern Illinois State Teachers College, DeKalb and had been a resident of Elgin for most of her life.
She was a member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church, Elgin and sang in the Parish choir for many years. She was a longtime member of Harmony Inc., a women’s barbershop organization, and was singing with the Valley Belles when they won three national championships. Charlene sang bass in two championship quartettes, The OnChords in 1972 and A Good Arrangement in 1978. She also served as an accredited judge for the Harmony Inc.’s program in it’s Secretary of Judges category.
In addition to her love of all kinds of music, she was an accomplished seamstress and created treasures for her friends and family. An upbeat personality and a crossword puzzle solver, she touched all lives around her.
Surviving are her husband, Victor J. Centanni whom she married on November 8, 1952 in Elgin, her 2 sons, Anthony “Tony” (Carol) Centanni of Elgin and Scott (Justine) Centanni of Chandler, AZ, 5 grandchildren, Stephanie, Rebecca, Tony all of Elgin and Christopher and Andrew of Chandler, AZ, her sister, Patricia (Donald) Laird of Elgin and many other loving relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a son, John in infancy.
Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 A.M., Friday, September 14 at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, Elgin. Entombment will be in Mount Hope Cemetery, Elgin. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at Laird Funeral Home, Elgin and Friday from 9:30 A.M. until the time of mass in the church.
