Roland "Duke" Beth

Roland H. “Duke” Beth, 82 of Elgin passed away Tuesday, July 16, 2013 in Elgin. He was born June 21, 1931 in Dundee the son of Herman and Rose Hormann Beth. He was a graduate of Dundee High School in 1951 and had been a resident of the Dundee and Elgin area all of his life. He served in the United States Marine Corp from 1952 to 1954. He was employed by Ludwig Dairy for 30 years and then Bedard & Morency as a cabinet maker, and then part time at First United Methodist Church as a janitor for 10 years and Laird Funeral Home, Elgin as a driver and funeral assistant for 10 years.
He was a three sport athlete in high school and was slowed his junior year by polio. He rebounded in 1950-51 to set school and conference single-season scoring records and earn All-State recognition in basketball. He was inducted in the Dundee-Crown Athletic Hall of Fame in 2005 and the Illinois Basketball Coach’s Association Hall of Fame in 2013.
His interests were spending time with family & friends, wood working, spending time is his garden, traveling with the travel club with the bank and attending his grandchildren’s sporting events.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Elgin and American Legion Post 57, Elgin.
Surviving are his wife, Nancy Shott Beth whom he married on November 27, 1954,
3 children, Michael (Kathy) Beth Sturgeon Bay, WI., Susan (Steve) Hansen of Elgin
and Barbara (David) Head of Elgin, 5 grandchildren, Andrew and Ryan Beth,
Sarah Beth Hansen, Alexis and Lauren Head and
1 brother, Jack (Weida) Beth of Dundee and a special niece Darlene Hahn and
Many other nieces, nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death by parents, 3 sisters, Evelyn Geary, Betty Tyndall and Marian Hawks, 2 brothers, Marvin and James Beth.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 A.M., Saturday, July 20 at First United Methodist Church 216 E. Highland Ave., Elgin. Burial with military honors will follow at Lakewood Memorial Park, Elgin. Visitation will be held on Friday from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at Laird Funeral Home, Elgin and Saturday from 9:45 until the time of services in the church. In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to First United Methodist Church, Elgin.
