Sallie P. Burns, 87, of Elgin passed away on July 19, 2013. She was born on September 5, 1925 in Opelika, Alabama, the daughter of Farmer and Ida (Harris) Rivers. Sallie had worked for the City of Elgin many years prior to her retirement. She also worked for KDK Elgin Beatification Program,
She was a member of Progressive Baptist Church in Elgin, the Fremont Board association of Elgin, and the Elgin Tri City Mix Bowling League.
Survivors include her 8 children: Ann (Chester) Barnett of Elgin; James (Janet) Burt of Rex, GA; Milton Burns of Madison, WI; James Spates of Charlotte, NC; Brenda Barnes of South Elgin, IL; Raymond Burns of Elgin, IL; Earl (Gayle) Burt of River Dale, GA; and Peter (Dion) Burns of Elgin, IL; 13 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren along with a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Allie Burns in 2008; a sister: Hattie Rivers; 4 brothers: Jessie, Robert, Marvin, and Charles Rivers; and a special grandson: Isaac “Dell” Dyson.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday July 24, 2013 at 11:00 A.M. in the Second Baptist Church, 1180 Summit St., Elgin, IL with Rev. Willie Tate officiating. Burial will follow at Bluff City Cemetery, Elgin. Visitation will be on Wednesday at church from 10:00 A.M. until the service. Laird Funeral Home, Elgin is in charge of arrangements.
