David Wallace Roome

David Wallace Roome, 80, of Elgin passed away on Friday, January 10, 2014, at Presence St. Joseph Hospital, Elgin. He was born on September 2, 1933 in Chicago the son of Jesse and Ruth (Wallies) Roome.

David attended Senn High School and Wright Junior College in Chicago, served in the US Army in Germany from 1953 -1955, worked for E.C. Rick Paint Co., Sherwin Williams Paint Co., and then American Airlines until 1996 when he retired after 30 years of service. David had resided in Elgin since 1966, had been a member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church, and was a long time Cubs fan and played at Wrigley field in 1948 in the Chicago City Baseball Championship game. Most of all he treasured attending his children’s activities as they were growing up and those of his grandchildren, which he rarely missed.

He is survived by his loving wife Bernice (Shor) of 53 years; devoted father of Mary (Marlon) Roome-Godbolt, David E. (Janice) Roome and Jennifer (John) Thomas. Proud grandfather of Anthony David Roome, Megan Margaret Roome, Sidney Marie Thomas and Abigail Ann Thomas.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday, January 17, 2014, at 10:30 AM at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, Elgin. Burial will follow at Bluff City Cemetery, Elgin. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 4-8 PM in the Laird Funeral Home, Elgin, and on Friday morning at the church from 9:30 AM until the time of mass.
