John Alan “Al” Armstrong, 57, of Algonquin, passed away Saturday, May 17, 2014.
He was born February 20, 1957 in Williamson, West Virginia the son of
John Thomas Armstrong and Mary Martha (Ferguson) Armstrong.
John was married to Debra (Pelz) Armstrong October 25, 1975 at Our
Lady of Mercy Catholic Church in Chicago.
He was a graduate of Lane Technical High School in 1975. After
graduation, he completed training as a Registered Nurse through
Ravenswood Hospital in Chicago. He worked as an RN at the
Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago and at Northern Illinois Medical
Center (NIMC) in McHenry, IL. He later established and ran a small
business, Al N’ Ann’s Collectibles, in McHenry, IL for 20 years, where
he cultivated a diverse and caring store family.
He was an avid music lover and played electric and acoustic guitar. He
shared his encyclopedic knowledge of movies, music, history, martial
arts, and life with everyone he met. His storytelling was only matched
by his wise counsel and selfless generosity to others through Toys for
Tots, donations to numerous charities, and the gift of his time.
He is survived by his parents John and Mary; wife Debra; sons Shaun
(Laura Valenziano) Armstrong; Ryan (fiancée Kelsey Tharp) Armstrong;
brother-in-law John (Vicki) Pelz; and many cherished family and
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents Joseph Paul
(Lottie) Ferguson; paternal grandparents Carl (Opal) Armstrong;
father- and mother-in-law John F. (Joan) Pelz; and brother-in-law
Frank J. Pelz.
Memorial visitation will be held on Saturday, May 24, 2014 from 2 to 6
PM at the Wait Ross Allanson Funeral & Cremation Services Chapel, 201 S. Main St., Algonquin.
