Merle E. Childs

Merle E. Childs, 95, of Elgin passed away on April 29, 2015 in his home. He was born on October, 20 1919 in Elgin the son of Ernest and Ella (Ultes) Childs. Merle Graduated from Elgin High School and participated in Basketball. He was a Veteran, and served in the US Air Force during WWII. He had worked for the Elgin National Watch Factory and retired from Head Inc. Merle, along with his brother, George, played Handball and won many Elgin City Championships in the 1950-60’s, and was affectionately know as “Worlds oldest Roadie” for his son’s band, Stormcrow.
Survivors include his 4 children: Marilee (Kenneth) Crooks, Mary Lyn (David) Capps, Michael (Hanan) Childs and Merle “Mick” (Sandra) Childs; 4 grandchildren: Matthew, Amy, Derek and Melissa; along with many family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife: Mary Ann Childs in 1998; a granddaughter: Liana in 2013; and 2 brothers: Phillip and George.
Funeral services will be held on Monday May 4, 2015 at 10:00 A.M. at the Laird Funeral Home, Elgin. Burial will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery.
