Judith M. Cheetham

Judith ‘Judy’ Cheetham, of Elgin passed away peacefully Sept. 16, 2016 in her home with her loving husband, Thomas, and daughters, Elizabeth and Kathryn, at her side. Judy was born on May 13, 1938 and raised in Oak Park, IL. She married Tom in 1965 and together lived in Annapolis, MD and Morristown, NJ. In 1969, they moved to Elgin to be nearer to friends and family after the birth of their first daughter. Judith was a dedicated wife, mother and friend who balanced a diverse career after attending Lawrence University and night courses at Northwestern University. She started her career in the media departments at Grant Advertising and Clinton E. Frank , Inc. Later she worked with young children at the YWCA of Elgin as a teacher in the ‘Tiny Tot’s’ program, followed by a position in the human resources department at CR Industries. Judith retired from the Courier Newspaper in their classified department on July 15, 2003. Judith was a long term member of Fox Valley Beaux Arts Women’s Club, diligent local Election Judge, and enjoyed volunteering for the Elgin House Walk (since inception), Elgin’s Gail Borden Public Library and many other special events and places. Surviving are her husband of 51 years, Thomas Gordon Cheetham, her children, Elizabeth O’Toole (John) and Kathryn Pizzi (Michael), 2 grandchildren, Frani O’Toole and Margaret Pizzi, brother, William Shapiro, mother in law, E. Carroll Cheetham, brother in law, John Cheetham, 2 sister in laws, Ellen Shapiro and Arleen Cheetham, 2 nephews, Matt Shapiro and Dan Shapiro and niece, Barbara Shapiro. She was preceded in death by her parents, Sidney and Barbara Shapiro, and father in law, G. Rex Cheetham. A memorial service will be held for friends and family on October 9th from 1-3 at the Hawthorne Hill Nature Center and will include a Solo Cello Concert, Prayer Service/Remembrance and Afternoon Tea. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Anderson Animal Shelter. Judith’s private burial was at Bluff City Cemetery on Sept 24th.
