Mary Vickers

 Mary Vickers was born on July 3, 1920 and was later adopted by Grover and Nana Fox who raised her in
the Rawson and Findlay, Ohio area.
Mary attended Bowling Green University, Ohio, earned a degree in music, she then attended University
of Michigan and earned her MA in counseling.
She later worked as a music teacher in Ohio, she moved to Michigan and was a school social worker for
3 state area, traveling alone by car from school to school and loving every minute of time spent helping
She married the love of her life, Jesse Vickers, and they moved the Elgin, Il. Mary worked as homebound
tutor, substitute teacher and as a special education teacher. They later adopted their only child, Bill,
another love of her life.
The First Congregational Church of Elgin was her home for over 50 years, serving on many boards,
taught Church School, pianist for worship service for over 20 years, delivered Meals on Wheels and
helping with Soup Kettle.
Mary was very civic minded and served with great joy and a willingness to help were needed. She
presented programs that helped to end prejudice and discrimination and was awarded the Susan B.
Anthony Award from the AAUW and the YWCA Leadership Award for Social Justice for her unending
dedication to equality. Mary organized the local chapter of the Panel of American Women.
She was a member of the Elgin Symphony League, University Women, Elgin Retired Teachers as well as
many other groups during her life.
Living her life with grace and humor, she loved her time with family and friends, volunteering, travel,
reading and music.
She is preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
Mary is survived by her son Bill and wife Kathy. Grandchildren Scott Berry, Amy Berry and Rachel Sauber
and husband John. She has 4 great-grandchildren, Justin, Alex, Emmaline and Ruby.
A private service will be held, with a public memorial service at a latter date.
