William Chesbrough Sr.

William R. Chesbrough, “Coach Ches” 92 of Elgin passed away Monday, October 18, 2010 at Provena St. Joseph Hospital, Elgin. He was born March 17, 1918 in Hartford, Conn., the son of Frederick and Florence Tillyer Chesbrough. He was raised in Platttsburgh, New York and received a BS degree from Syracuse University where he was a 3 sport athlete. He later received an MS degree from the University of Wisconsin.
After playing baseball in the Pittsburgh Pirates farm system, he joined the U.S. Navy in 1942 and attained the rank of Chief Petty Officer while serving at Great Lakes Naval Air Station.
 
From 1950 to 1985 he served as head basketball coach for Elgin High School winning 573 games. His team took second in the state in 1955 and made three other Elite Eight appearances. His teams won 21 regional titles and 10 sectional crowns. He became Athletic Director at Elgin High School in 1962. He was subsequently inducted in the Elgin Sports Hall of Fame and the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame.
 
Surviving are his 2 sons, William (Susan) Chesbrough and their children, Jessica(Zach) Otte, Kelly and Jill and their granddaughter, Madison, Thomas (Debra) Chesbrough and their children, Daren, Leah and Allie and a sister, Erna Curtis living in California.
 
He was preceded in death by his parents and wife and loving mother of his children, Eleanor Kluender Chesbrough.
 
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 A.M., Saturday, October 23 at First United Methodist Church 216 E. Highland Ave., Elgin with Rev. Jon Hutchison officiating. Burial will military honors will follow at Lakewood Memorial Park, Elgin. Visitation will be held on Friday from 3:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at Laird Funeral Home, Elgin and Saturday at the church from 9:30 A.M. until the time of services. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Elgin Sports Hall of Fame Foundation Scholarship Fund.
