Dorothy R. Carlson
(03-07-1920 - 11-17-2017)

Dorothy R. Carlson, 97, of Elgin, died peacefully on Friday, November 17.
She was born March 7, 1920, the daughter of Fred and Florence Kappen in Chicago, and was
an Elgin resident for nearly 80 years. Married in 1941 to Leonard (d. 1992), they enjoyed this
matrimonial bond for over 50 years together. She was an active member of the St. Joseph
parish in Elgin, and her power of prayer was evident in the full blessed life she lived and her
family experienced. Although starting her working life as a nurse at St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin, she soon found her true calling as a hard-working and dedicated housewife and mother. She encountered
numerous outlets for her boundless love of family, friends, church, and her children’s schools.
She became a fixture at St. Joseph Hospital as a devoted volunteer for over 40 years who was
adored by all for her care of patients, staff, and visitors. Somehow she also found “leisure” time with bowling, fishing, cooking, dancing, listening to music, traveling, cheering on the White Sox, attending children’s and grandchildren’s events, and hosting family holidays. Survivors include three daughters, Lynne Jones of Huntley, Dianne Mompier of West Dundee, Laurie Totton (Tom) of Elgin; two sons, Dan (Heather) of Geneva, and Larry (Annie) of St. Peters, MO.; one sister Pat Hendon; eight grandchildren, Brian, Amy, Kiley, Kris, Amanda, Erik,Kurt, and Owen; eight great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a son Dick, four brothers, Bill, Harvey, Rick, and Jack; and one sister Joan Wright. Visitation will be immediately prior to the service, from 1:00-2:00 p.m. Services will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 25 at Laird Funeral Home, Elgin, Chaplain Ed Hunter officiating. Burial will follow at River Valley Memorial Gardens, West Dundee.
