Thomas Pershing Buckel
(12-11-1918 - 12-12-2010)

Thomas Pershing Buckel was born December 11, 1918 and died December 12, 2010 in Elgin at the age of 92. He was born in Chicago , Illinois the son of Joseph Thomas and Harriet (Gale) Buckel.

When he was 5, they moved to Lombard , Illinois with his brother Gale and sisters, Marjorie and Marion Ory.

He spoke frequently of his wonderful childhood, working and learning everything there is to know about tools from “Dad” and helping “Mother” with chores. He had great friends and teachers at Sacred Heart School . He then took the train to Marmion Military Academy for his high school years. His friendships at Marmion took him all around Dupage and Kane counties to learn about farm life, gathering countless tales he would later share with his family.

He worked in Chicago for Western Electric until he was called into service and joined the Army Air Corps. After the war, he met Lois Koepfle, whom he adored and married on June 21, 1947. They had three children, Mary Gale Severance, Marjorie Grace (Jean-Claude) Delemont and Joseph Thomas (Kim) Buckel. They made their home in Elgin ’s’ first subdivision, Sunset Park . Tom stayed there for the rest of his life, and was probably the last “Original Owner”.

He retired from Bell Telephone Company after 40 years and quickly returned to his passion of flying. Able to fly until the age of 80, he kept up with all aspects of his great hobby for the rest of his life.

He is remembered for his perseverance, work ethic, love of family and a huge curiosity for science, technology, nature, history, and travel.

He is survived by his three children, five grandchildren, Julie, Jim, Veronique “Niki” (Walter) Palka, Michael (Katherine) Delemont, and Christina (Andrew) Weil;

Five great grandchildren, Ainsley Palka, Marcus and Joseph Delemont, and new born twins, Olive and Hazel Palka, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and a grandson, Thomas Raymond.

 Funeral mass will be held on Thursday December 16, 2010 at 10:30 A.M. at St. Laurence Catholic Church, Elgin . Burial with honors will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery . Visitation will be on Thursday at the church from 9:00 A.M. until the time of services.
