Marvin C. Schmidt, 98, of Elgin passed away Wednesday, February 1, 2017 at Advocate Sherman Hospital, Elgin. He was born one of five children to Frederick “Fred” and Gertrude Schmidt. He graduated from St. John’s Lutheran School and was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church all of his life. He went into dairy farming at the age of 15 and loved horses and dairy farming. On Dec. 13, 1941 he was united in marriage to Ellen Lang, they farmed a 250 acre farm and a herd of 46 dairy cattle. After farming into the fifties they moved to Elgin and Marv went to work for the City of Elgin at Bluff City Cemetery where he was a foreman and later became superintendent of the cemetery, which he did for 23 years. In 1958 he initiated the Avenue of Flags at the cemetery and has brought back the past history and meaning of Memorial Day.
Marvin is survived by his 3 daughters, Diane (Larry) Retterer of Marshall, IL, Debbie Schmidt of Elgin and Dena (Robert) Bolin of South Elgin, 2 sons, Leonard (Marilyn) of Crossville, TN and David (Dawn) of Elgin, 7 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Ellen on May 4, 1976, his beloved grandson, Sean Cavanagh, granddaughter, Lisa Schmidt, sisters, Helen Virgil, Virginia Grote and Charlene Darst, along with his brother, Clayton.
Funeral Services will be held on Monday, Feb. 6, 2017 at 11:00 AM at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Elgin with Rev. Hannibal Frederich officiating. Burial will follow at Bluff City Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Sunday from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Wait Ross Allanson Funeral & Cremation Services Chapel, Elgin and then at the church on Monday from 10:00 AM until the time of services.
