Robert W. Johnson, age 86, died on March 17th, 2018, at Presence St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin, Illinois. He was born in Chariton, Iowa, on February 26, 1932, the son of Renus W. and Margaret (née Gildroy) Johnson. He graduated from Chariton High School in 1950. After studying architecture at Iowa State University, Mr. Johnson earned a degree in civil engineering (BSCE) from the University of Iowa in 1956. For the next fifteen years, he served as Chief Engineer for Johnson Machine Works in Chariton. In 1971 he joined Lakeside Equipment Corporation in Bartlett, Illinois, retiring in December of 2008 as president of the company. On June 17, 1956 he married Suzanne Piper in Chariton. In addition to his wife, Mr. Johnson is survived by his three children: Anne (Rick) Veague of Batavia, IL, Eric (Ann) Johnson, of Elgin, and Amy Johnson (Vernon Hartman) of Cincinnati. He is also survived by five grandchildren: Sam (Merit) Veague of Pasadena, CA, Maia Veague of Seattle, Thomas Veague of Washington, DC, Michael Johnson of Iowa City, IA, and Piper Johnson of Elgin, as well as his sister-in-law Carol Johnson of Elkhorn, NE. He was preceded in death by his parents and his younger brother James R. Johnson. Throughout his life, Mr. Johnson participated in numerous church, service, civic and trade organizations: Chariton City Council, Aeolian Singers, First Lutheran Church of Chariton, the Za-Ga-Zig Shrine, and notably as a Chariton volunteer fireman. A member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Elgin since 1971, Mr. Johnson served as president of the church council, and sang in the choir for 46 years. Interment in the Bluff City Cemetery, Elgin, will be private. A family service will be held at a later date.
