 Jean A. Jacobsen, 81, of Elgin died Thursday, Dec. 27, 2018 after a brief illness. Jean, daughter of George Masters and Madelyn Pamerleau, was born on January 20, 1937 in Alpena, MI.
Jean grew up in Alpena, working in her family’s clothing store and sailing on Lake Huron. She was a devout Roman Catholic her entire life and volunteered regularly at St. Laurence Catholic Church. She also studied music and became a wonderful pianist, a talent she enjoyed throughout her life. Jean was the only person in her family to attend college. She graduated from Michigan State University with a Bachelor’s degree in business education and received her Masters in education from Central Michigan University. While at college, she met and eventually married her first husband, Stephen L. Healy, Jr. with whom she had 5 children.
Jean married Herb Jacobsen in 1982. Jean and Herb shared a love of dancing, gardening, travel, family and pets. Jean was a life-long teacher who taught at a reservation school in Arizona early in her marriage, then at the Elgin Academy and eventually retired from teaching at Hampshire High School. Jean was an active member of the Women of the Moose and served on the Board of Regents. Jean also had an enormous love for animals. She rescued and fostered many cats, in addition to having her own beloved pets.

Surviving 5 children: Stephen Healy (Jennifer) of Columbus, OH, Michael Healy (Brooke) of Charlotte, NC, Shannon McDermott (Paul) of Sierra Madre, CA, Patrick Healy (Tina) of Round Lake Beach, IL, Shawn Healy (Lisa) of New Cumberland, PA; 7 grand-children: Catherine McDermott, Matthew McDermott, Joshua McDermott, Erin Healy, Alexandra Healy, Milena Healy, Roman Healy; 3 step-sons: David Jacobsen (Teri), Bill Jacobsen, Herbert Jacobsen III;
1 brother: George Masters

Visitation will be at the Laird Funeral Home in Elgin, IL on Wednesday, January 2nd, from 4-8pm. Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, January 3rd at 10:00am at St. Laurence Catholic Church, with Father Andrew Mulcahey. Burial will follow at Lakewood Memorial Park.
