Sandra Kay Simonson (Sandy) of Elgin passed away Friday, May 31 in Elgin. She was born April 8, 1955 in Elgin and was the daughter of Archie and Shirley Simonson. Sandy loved music and was an accomplished violinist. She played with the Elgin Symphony Orchestra for many years and was very proud to say that she had played with The Who and Yo-Yo Ma during that time. She also shared her talents with her church, playing for many services. One of her favorite pieces of music was Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity (from The Planets by Gustav Holst). It was so appropriate because Sandy always brought the fun wherever she was. Sandy was employed at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church for over 30 years where she loved and cared for members of the congregation with her whole heart. She especially enjoyed planning events and cooking for them. Although she had no children of her own, children were always attracted to her kind and gentle spirit. Her nieces and nephews were like her own children and she was always there to play or listen or encourage. She took special joy in her great-nephew and niece, Mason and Zara, who lovingly called her Ta-ta or Tots. Sandy’s hobbies included baking and gardening; cookbooks and seed catalogs were some of her favorite reading material. Survivors include her mother Shirley, her sister Linda (Richard) Puchyr, her brothers Richard(Sharon) Simonson and Ronald (Kelly) Simonson: her nieces and nephews Alissa Puchyr, Kristen(Pradeep) Jain, Matthew Puchyr and Kevin Simonson; and her great-nephew and niece, Mason and Zara Jain. She was preceded in death by her father Archie. Funeral services will be at 3 PM on Friday, June 7 at Christ the Lord Lutheran Church, 14N462 Tina Trail, Elgin. Visitation will be from 1 to 3 at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Elgin Youth Symphony Orchestra.
