Etta Marlene “Lee” Fredericks passed away peacefully at home (Algonquin, IL) in the company of her loving family on the evening of June 5, 2019. She was smiling as she took her last breath. Affectionately known as Lee to family and friends or Nana to more than a dozen grandchildren/great-grandchildren, she was a kindhearted woman whose generous nature, strong spirit and wry sense of humor will be deeply missed by all. She was 84 years old.
Etta was born in Coatesville, PA in 1934 to Edward and Bonnie Dean (deceased) and grew up in Rumford, Maine with her sister Edwina. She was an honor student and majorette in her high school marching band. Lee also played the zither and loved to dance. She graduated from Bay Path College in 1954 and married Ray Fredericks in 1955. Together they raised five children, residing in Maine, Florida, New York and New Mexico before settling in Illinois. Family vacations were spent at a cabin in Maine or camping at many of the great National Parks.
After being a homemaker for many years, Lee took a job as a secretary in the Dean’s Office at Illinois College. She was soon promoted to Administrative Assistant, a position she held until her retirement 35 years later. Around the house Lee was always busy, whether she was sewing, gardening, cleaning or helping someone with homework. Ever frugal, she delighted in finding good deals at garage sales and could cook hamburger a dozen different ways. Every holiday she spent countless hours planning and preparing fabulous family meals. Dessert always included numerous pies, chocolate cake and her famous toffee. When the family grew to include numerous grandchildren, Lee hosted summer reunions to keep everyone connected. She was also an avid tennis player and enjoyed Bridge and taking trips with a group of friends she had known for many years. During quieter moments Lee loved to read mystery novels and relax with a nice cup of tea.
In later years Lee developed Alzheimer’s disease which severely limited her mental and physical abilities. Yet she always had a cheerful disposition, smiling and eager to see visitors even when her verbal communication skills declined. Her face would light up when family members entered the room and she particularly loved to see babies. She never complained and always trusted that things would work out for the best. Mom was the very heart of our family and we are bereft without her but take comfort in knowing that now she is dancing with the angels.
Left to cherish Lee’s memory are her children and their spouses: Beth Moss (Tim), Victoria Pierce (John), Lisa Baker (Greg), Sharon Dearing (John) and Jeff Fredericks, as well as her former husband Ray Fredericks, sister Edwina Fancy (Don), nephew Dean Fancy (Cynthia) and niece Donna Dickson (Andy). She will be forever remembered as a loving Nana by her grandchildren: Kelsey Moss Petty (Jason), Timothy Jared Moss, McKenna Moss, Hannah Pierce, Josiah Pierce, Justin Baker (Jessica), Jerret Baker, Breanne Baker (Brian), Mayelin Baker DeMattia (Brad), Forest Dearing, Ashliegh Fredericks, Nicholas Fredericks and Haliegh Fredericks.
We would like to thank Tina, who provided such wonderful care for Lee over this past year, allowing Mom to remain at home and engaged in family life. A memorial service for Etta Marlene Fredericks will be held on Friday, June 14 at Wait Ross Allanson Funeral & Cremation Services Chapel, 201 S. Main St., Algonquin, IL. Visitation will be 4:00-6:00pm followed by a memorial service at 6pm. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a contribution to the Alzheimer’s Association. 847-658-4232 or www.lairdfamilyfuneralservices.com.
