 Wilber George Smith, went to be with the Savior he loved and served on July 23, 2019. Wilber was married to Eva Mae Radtke on September 19, 1949. Wilber graduated from Elgin High School, attended Wheaton College and received an Honorary Doctorate degree in Business Management from Judson College (University) in 1990. He began his banking career in 1953 with The First National Bank of Elgin, posting and filing checks, and retired in 1990, as Chairman of the Board and CEO of the bank. He was also Chairman and CEO of FNW Bancorp, a seven bank holding company, headquartered in Elgin. Wilber was known for his involvement in the Elgin community, including Trustee of Judson College for 30+ years; the United Way of Elgin as Campaign Chair and President- given the Willis Reed Humanitarian Award; Kiwanis Noon Club, 25 years member; SHIM-Sherman Hospital Interested Men-President 1978-79; St. Joseph Hospital Advisory Board; and Elgin Symphony Board of Directors.
His faith was expressed through his involvement in Grace Evangelical Church, Bowes Road, Elgin, as founding member, organist, and choir director for 30 years. Upon retirement, Wilber and Eva moved to Peoria, Arizona, where he pursued many interests, including traveling, golf, stained glass, model building and treasurer of Bellevue Heights Church and Foundation of Sun City, Arizona

Survivors include his wife: Eva M Smith, married for 69 years; a sister: Mary (Remmer) Schuetz of Ashton, IL; along with many, nieces, nephews, family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Archie and Marie (Evens) Smith and a brother: Jon Smith.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday August 1, 2019, at 11:00am, at the Laird Funeral Home, Elgin, with Rev. Dave Bohyer officiating. Burial will follow at Bluff City Cemetery, Elgin. Visitation will be on Thursday, from 10:00am, until the time of service, at the funeral home.
