 Ben Corn, 92 of Elgin, passed away surrounded by family on October 9, 2019. He was born in Hamilton County on August 16, 1927 to Walter and Bessie Corn. He joined the Navy and served in Japan during WWII. He was the ships barber when at sea. After returning from the war, he met his wife, they married in 1947 and moved to Elgin in 1950 with their first two children. He worked at Elgin Watch Company, drove a cab and attended barber college. He was hired on and eventually owned Goodies Barber Shop, later renamed The Razor's Edge. Back in the day, he was known as the "Flat Top King". He was a visionary person and invested in Elgin by building the Tastee Freeze (Corn's Freeze) and Dixie Cream Donuts, both on the west side. He acquired and restored buildings in downtown Elgin including the McBride building on Douglas Ave. He was an avid sports fan and attended many, many school sporting events. Professional sports were his passion and attended countless Bears, Hawks and Cubs games. He was a die-hard Cubs fan and was easily recognized in his Cubs jacket smoking a big cigar with several to share in his pocket. He attended a Super Bowl, several MLB World Series and the 1972 Olympics. He was seen in Munich, Germany giving out autographs after being mistaken for an American shot putter. He loved fishing in Canada and community involvement in Elgin with 5O-year pins from the American Legion and the Masons. He was preceded in death by his wife of 71 years, Lucille (Cede), two sisters Sophia and Fern, and his twin brother John. He is survived by seven children, Wayne, Kathy (Robert) Brown, Bruce (Verdelle), Steve (Bonny), Debbie (William} Scheitlin, Diane (Douglas) Stredde and Brian (Christine). He has 14 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Visitation will be Monday, October 14 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Laird Funeral Home, Elgin. Private interment will military honors will be at Lakewood Memorial Park, Elgin. Memorials may be given to the Elgin High School Booster Club.
