Theo George Lorenzen was taken by coronavirus April 27th, 2020, in the care of Artis Senior Living of Bartlett, IL (who’s care, along with Alden of Long Grove, is deeply appreciated).
Theo was born April 9, 1935 in the town of Oevenum on the North Sea island of Föhr, Germany. Growing up, the eldest of four children, he enjoyed swimming and ice skating. After secondary school, he apprenticed in horticulture at his uncle’s business which he purchased when his uncle retired. Theo emigrated to the US in 1958 but without a visa or military service returned to Germany. That year, he married Rita Schranz, and enlisted in the US Army 11th Armored Cavalry Division as a Specialist IV tank driver—where he once had lunch at the same diner as Elvis Presley and they later waved, passing each other’s tanks. In April 1961 he and Rita arrived in New York City, where his first sight of Lady Liberty left a lasting memory. They settled in Elgin, IL, where he was a florist at Morgan’s Flowers, through which he met Alfred Bersted (Bersted Manufacturing) and later worked for him and his wife Grace for many years. In 1978 Theo and Rita began franchising the St Charles 7-Eleven. The couple raised their two children, Patricia and Thomas, and Theo cared for Rita until her passing of illness in 1984.
Theo (or Ted, as he went by) soon found sympathy and joyful companionship, in Carol Garritano. They married in Las Vegas, and lived in Carpentersville. Over their quarter century together, Ted devoted his days to his landscaping business, helping his wife run her tavern (Carol’s Corner), sharing their home with their beloved dogs and friends, and he had warm affection for Carol’s adult children as well. Throughout his life, Theo has been a dedicated, soldier, husband, father, employer, amateur pilot and lover of boating with a calm strength and clever whit.
Theo is predeceased by his father George Lorenzen, mother Dora Christine Lorenzen (née Michelsen), brother Ernst Lorenzen, best friend Otto, and his first wife Rita Maria Lorenzen (née Schranz).
He is survived by his wife Carol Garritano, brother Günther Lorenzen, sister Helga Köhler, daughter Patricia Kathryn Moore (née Lorenzen) and her husband Glenn R. Moore, son Thomas George Lorenzen, granddaughter Patricia Maria Vanegas and her husband Enrique Vanegas, and grandson Glenn Moore III.
