David Wilson Schmidt, 54, of Elgin went home to be with his Savior on May 13, 2020. He was born June 2, 1965 in Milwaukuee,WI, son of electrician, Ralph, and Beverly Schmidt. He was a brother to Louise, Janet and Dan Schmidt. As a young man, he enjoyed playing football, hunting, and working on a local dairy farm. He studied business and communications at Maranatha Baptist University, graduating in 1987. It was there he met his wife Kimberly, whom he married on July 27, 1985. They moved to Elgin in 1987.

Dave worked jobs at UPS, in roofing, and in auto advertising sales before starting his own business, Coupon Magazine. In 2010, Dave transitioned into real estate, leading to him co-founding the commercial real estate firm, Realty Metrix, expanding his work in negotiation and structuring deals. He utilized his expertise in handyman work by taking on property management, stewarding the buildings he managed with excellence. His greatest business achievements include the purchase and renovation of Bluff City Boulevard and brokering the development of Love’s truck stop in Hampshire.

What contributed most to Dave’s success was his love of people and his faith. Dave was a friend to everyone he met, and is known for his incredible work ethic and his willingness to bring honesty and integrity to all customers and colleagues. He was a man of his word who worked hard at the opportunities that God presented to him and remained faithful and hopeful through both challenging and prosperous times. He served on the board at Riverwoods Christian Center, and spent his life using his gifts to support others in his church, neighborhood, and community.

Dave was first and foremost a husband and father, the provider and protector of his family, who were everything to him. He adored his wife Kimberly and their daughters Jessica (29) and Jennifer (27). He loved being a dad and was present and supportive of his girls all throughout their lives - at performances, games, and most importantly at the dinner table every night. He took them on camping trips and adventures, and created quality time for connection and mentorship into adulthood. He loved his son-in-law Anthony Acevedo and doted on his grandchildren Royal David (3) and Esperanza Esther (1). He and grandson, Royal, were best buddies who shared a passion for big trucks, construction, and cars that go fast. Dave always maintained his own childlike spirit, running around playing with the grandkids, and bringing his humor and playful sarcasm to all aspects of life.

Dave was an avid outdoorsman, hunter, and wildlife conservationist. He marveled at nature and was a master at spotting animals on the horizon. While he loved the thrill of a hunt, he also treasured the countless hours he spent sitting in the trees or hiking into the forest before sunrise, discovering the magic that nature reveals in moments of silence and stillness. He enjoyed traveling, and in 2019, experienced safari in Africa with friends, a dream come true for him.

He is preceded in death by his father Ralph Schmidt, his grandparents, and his nephew, Josiah.
He is survived by his wife Kimberly, daughters Jennifer and Jessica, son-in-law Anthony, grandchildren Royal and Esperanza, as well as his mother Beverly, siblings, Dan, Janet, and Louise, and many beloved nieces and nephews. He left a heartache that can never be filled. He lived by the motto, “Expect nothing, hope always, trust God in everything.” We know Jesus greeted him with “Well done, good and faithful servant.”

A drive in service celebrating his life will be held at First Baptist Church in Elgin at 3pm on Tuesday, June 2. The service will be streamed live and available for replay at https://fbcelgin.com/church-online then click Facebook or Youtube Live.
