ELGIN – James J. Scales, age 79, passed away Thursday, September 3, 2020 at his home. He was born January 29, 1941 in Worcester, Massachusetts to Peter and Lillian Scales.
Jim served in the Air Force and was stationed at Chanute Air Force Base in Rantoul, IL where he met and married his wife of 56 years, Joan (Luckey) Scales. Together, they welcomed 3 children, Michael (d. 1972), Cathi (Bill) Boldwyn and Kelli (Matt) Walsh. Jim had 2 grandchildren, Jake and Lola Walsh.
Jim spent his career in sales for Coke, Charles Todd Uniform and McGrath Buick. Once he retired from sales, he began working for the U-46 Bus Garage from which he retired after 15 years.
Jim was a devoted family man—he loved Joni more than anything in the world. He loved and supported his daughters whenever they needed a shoulder. He enjoyed watching Jake play American Legion baseball and loved spending time with Lola for whom he had a special place in his heart. He truly enjoyed spending time with family and friends.
Jim loved to have a good time—you knew he was there as he would start out with a “BANG!” He was a member and past Commander of the American Legion Post 57. He was a 31-year member, past Trustee and House Committee Appointee of the Elgin Riverside Club where he was honored as 2009 Man of the Year. Jim was also a member the Owl’s Club in Elgin.
Jim loved everything Boston and was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots—so strong that he held a sincere disdain for Chicago Cubs but still cheered them on—“Go Cubs Go (and take the Bears with you).”
Jim is survived by his loving wife, Joni, daughters Cathi and Kelli, sisters Constance Scales and Suzanne Scales, and 2 grandchildren Jake and Lola.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, his son Michael (age 7), and 3 brothers—William, John and Robert.
There will be a Celebration of Life gathering at the the Elgin American Legion Post 57 on September 19th from 5-9 PM
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Jim’s name to Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago Foundation, Department 4586, Carol Stream, IL 60122-4586
