Howard Sam Schifferer was born on December 13th 1932 and quietly departed this world to be with his creator on November 18, 2020 while his children were at his side. He was married 64 years to Patricia Marie Schifferer (Weiss) and lived in Elgin, IL his whole life. Howard’s sister, Eileen Bahr, resides in Sabetha Kansas. He is predeceased by his father, Sam, and mother, Celestina.
Howard (Howie) is survived by his wife and four children: Sue (husband, Joe Aeschleman, Dean (wife, Susie Chapman Schifferer), Heidi (husband, Ted Schock and Donna (husband, Brooks Boyce). The four siblings have 10 children and 9 wonderful spouses (Mitchell isn’t old enough to marry yet! 😊). These 9 couples have provided Great Grandpa and Grandma 13 great-grandchildren.
Howard was the founder and President of Elgin Builders Inc., a commercial general contractor and developer for over 40 years. The integrity in his business found him constructing churches, historic renovations, industrial and manufacturing facilities, colleges, banks, assisted living facilities and the like. In his last years he was emeritus consultant to “Schifferer Built LLC” construction of Chandler, Arizona while wintering in Arizona.
Howard loved his God, country, and family above all other pursuits. In high school he was active in Future Farmers of America and Rural Youth. He was drafted into the army where he worked on heavy equipment. Howard was a member and actively involved in the Apostolic Christian Church. He will also be remembered as a dad who was eagerly involved with his kids’ interests such as music, boating and the Elgin Voyageur Brigade.
The majority of his time was devoted to serving others. If a charity needed a constructor or a friend or relative needed a handy-man, Howard enthusiastically went to work. In the past few years, he primarily took care of his wife. He stated, “instead of building castles he is building meals”. Whatever time he took for himself was done playing with his kids, grandchildren and great grandchildren. His primary hobbies were fishing and traveling with “his best girl” (wife Pat,), and that he could do well!
As a result of Howard’s generous spirit and fun-loving personality, his Christian life will always be a fond memory and inspiration to all who knew him. To his offspring, the ultimate example of how to love God and love others, be responsible and trustworthy, respectful of others, work hard and smart, and above all…love some more!
Drive by visitation will be held at the Apostolic Christian Church, 2740 W. Highland Ave., Elgin 60124 on Monday, November 23, 2020 from 12:00 Noon -2:00 PM. Private burial will take place in the Apostolic Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Apostolic Christian Church.
