Earl Swearingen

Earl Swearingen, 91, of Monarch Landing in Naperville, formerly of Wheaton, passed away December 21, 2020. He was born May 29, 1929 in Hookstown, Pensylvania to Martha and Fred Van Swearingen. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Arlene “Bunny” Swearingen, his children, Jan (Kevin) Cory, of Quincy, Illinois and Brad (Linda) Swearingen, of Wheaton, Illinois He is also survived by four grandchildren, Kathryn (Wesley) Tappmeyer, Dr. Ryan (Gina) Swearingen, Kris (Nancy) Cory, Dr. Sean Swearingen. He is also survived by six great-grandchildren, Kyah, Lyrik, Blaise, Reed Tappmeyer and Olivia, and Aida Cory, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Dr. Merle Swearingen and a nephew, Michael Swearingen.
Earl was a Captain in the Marines, fought in the Korean War, was awarded a purple heart, and enjoyed an Honor Flight in 2017. Earl taught science and coached in Grant Park, Paxton, Wheaton and Maine Township West. Earl earned his undergraduate degree at Murray State in Kentucky and Master’s degrees from DePaul and Arizona State Universities. He was a Past-president of Illinois Association of Biology Teachers. Earl and Bunny enjoyed traveling the world together. Camping, sailing, cycling, and golfing were favorite family adventures.
Donations in memory can be made to Wreaths Across America or Salvation Army. Arrangements are being handled by Laird Funeral Home in Elgin. Private military services will be at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery.
