BEVERLY MAE SMITH ROSS was born on September 1, 1936, in Elgin, Illinois to Alonzo Sr. and Cyrene Smith.
Beverly entered into eternal rest at age 84, on Tuesday, December 29, 2020, at Advocate Sherman Hospital, Elgin, Illinois.
Beverly was also affectionately known to her family and friends as Bebe, Aunt Bebe, Bebe Grandma, Bevie, Grandma, and Mom (Beeb's). All which caused her eyes to light up, and a smile to emerge.
She attended Elgin Public Schools and graduated from Elgin High School, in June of 1954. She took advanced shorthand courses at Elgin Community College, and various workshops sponsored through employment with the State of Illinois.
Beverly married Odessa Ross, on March 7, 1959. To that union there were three children born, David, Debra and Darryl. The family moved from Cairo, IL to Elgin, IL, in 1964, and they eventually added a standard poodle to their family, and named her Tasha.
Beverly was employed by the State of Illinois (Elgin Mental Health Center) for 45 years. She began her career as a Clerk Typist, advanced to a Clerk Stenographer, and eventually landed the position of Secretary to the Director of Medical Services. During her employment she also served as the Secretary for the AFSME Union (American Federation of State County and Municipal Employees). She was a member of the Elgin Mental Health Center Bowling League. She retired in December of 1998. Upon retirement she worked as a Box Office Clerk at The Hemmens Cultural Center, Elgin, IL, for 15 years. She loved this job and it was a great fit for her seeing as how she was such a Social Butterfly.
Beverly was a raised in the African Methodist Episcopal Church (AME), and was a member of St. James AME, for her entire life. She loved the church and supported everything. She was also an active member of the Lydia Missionary Society. She sang in various choirs throughout the years and performed in plays. Her biggest joy was to see her great granddaughters Praise Dance, as members of The Movements of Praise, and participate in the service on Youth Sunday’s and holiday programs.
Beverly was also an active member and eventually the President, of the Mary Wheeler Chapter #17 American War Mothers. She became a member when her son, David joined the United States Marines.
Her hobbies included dance, crocheting, reading, spectator sports, research, and traveling. The family always looked forward to her sweet potato pies and deviled eggs at special gatherings.
Beverly leaves to cherish her memory, 1 son, David Ross of Milwaukee WI, 1 daughter, Debra Ross, 1 granddaughter, Krysta Hall, 4 great granddaughters, Makayla Hall-Lee, Kamarie Hall-Lee, Karissa Hall-Lee, and Mariah Hall-Lee, all of Elgin, IL, 1 brother, Dionne (Linda) Smith, Elgin, IL, 3 Sisters Aretta (T. DeWitt) Smith, Atlanta, GA, Joyce (Willie) Scruggs, Elgin, IL., and Dianne McCall, East Dundee, IL, 2 Brother’s-in-law, Clarence Ross Jr, Chicago, IL., and Louie Ford, Aurora, IL, 5 Sister’s-in-Law, Jeri Smith, Elgin, IL, Violet (Vidy) Butler, Ellenwood, GA, Bertha (William)Vaughn, Batavia, IL, Martha Ross, Chicago, IL, and Karon J. Smith, Elgin, IL, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, 1 son, Darryl Ross, 1 granddaughter, Dionna Ross Span, 5 brothers, Sheldon, Alonzo Jr, William, Leonard and Gregory (Vicki) Smith, Her In-laws, Clarence and Gertrude Ross, 5 brother’s-in-law, Michael McCall Sr., John Sledd, Moses Ross, Elvin Ross, and BJ Smith, 4 sister’s-in-law, Vicki Smith, Mary Hill, Mary Ford and Carolyn J. Brazier.
Home Going Celebration will be held on Thursday, January 7, 2021 at 11:00 AM in the Laird Funeral Home, Elgin. Burial will follow at Bluff City Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Thursday morning from 10:00 AM until the time of services in the funeral home.
