Walter F. Wetzel (1930-2021)
Walter (Wally) was born April 5, 1930 to Fred Wetzel from the Black Forest, Germany and Elsie Wetzel, from Stuttgart, Germany. His parents traveled through Ellis Island in 1919 and settled in Elgin. Walter was a first-generation citizen, raised in Elgin, and graduated from EHS in 1948. Upon graduation he entered the United States Marine Corp. He was especially proud of his USMC service. He married Charlotte Saunders, his high school sweetheart, in 1952 and they were married for 54 years. Wally became a carpenter and he and Charlotte operated a successful business, Wetzel Construction, for over 40 years. His thumbprint of work can be seen in every corner of our community. Wally loved the Elgin community and served in many different aspects; Wally was the past president of: Elgin Classic Little League (for 12 years serving as Coach of the Whiz Kids); Elgin Turners Club, (Gold Card Member & the club’s longest tenured member); St. Thomas More Parent Club; St. Edward HS Parent Club; S.E.B.A. South Elgin Business Association; American Legion Post 57 Home Association (27 years); Elgin Area Officials Association; West Suburban Officials Association He was a lifetime member of the St. Edward Booster Club and first recipient of the St. Edward HS Booster of the Year award; Wetzel Construction was honored as the St. Edward HS “Patron of the Year” in 2002. Wally managed the American Legion baseball team for five years and was a member of the American Legion for 48 years and a golf league member for 48 years. He was past president of the Elgin Riverside Club for several years & a current member of the club’s house committee, a recipient of the Gold Card Membership, and Elgin Riverside Club’s “Man of the Year” in 2006. Wally was a 56-year member of the club after joining the club in 1965. He loved the club and its members and enjoyed many celebrations there. One of the highlights of his life was his induction into the Elgin Sports Hall of Fame Association in 1991. The City of Elgin tapped Wally to be a member of the Veteran’s Memorial Park committee; he considered it a great honor. Walter is preceded in death by his parents, a brother Clifford, his loving wife, Charlotte Saunders Wetzel, his sisters Dorothy Wetzel Korte (Fred), & Mary Wetzel Scholl (Erv) & his sister-in-laws, Mary Rose Miseska, and Rita Hoke (Bill) as well as a very dear cousin, Leroy Wetzel. He is survived by his daughters Linda Wetzel (Michael Dorsey), Janet Schroeder (John),and his sons Larry Wetzel (Shea Gamble) and Jack Walter Wetzel. Also, grandchildren AnnMarie Wojciechowski (Jim Dufelmeier), Matthew Wojciechowski (Calah Goehring), Walter Joseph Wetzel & many nieces & nephews, and his brother-in-law, Earl (Nancy) Saunders. There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held at 11:30am, Feb. 13, 2021 at the American Legion Post 57. Buriel will be held at 10:30am at Mount Hope Cemetery the day of the memorial. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the St. Edward High School Football Program or the Elgin Sports Hall of Fame Foundation. Laird Funeral Home in Elgin is handling arrangements.
