James A. “Jim” Shumaker, 70, of Elgin, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 26, 2021 in his home. He was born on November 7, 1950 in Phoenix, AZ the son of John B. & Margaret Stayman Shumaker.
Jim was a graduate of the University of Berkley, CA with a BA in Art History, moving to the Elgin area in the 1970’s. He will long be remembered as an educational transportation specialist (bus driver) in School District u-46. Jim was a member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church, Elgin. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, serving as a Grand knight and District Deputy.
James is survived by his wife Nancy Akemann, his son Jason Bernard (Kristina) Shumaker, step sons: Joseph Bilek, John Bilek and Michael (Tammy) Bilek; grandchildren: Elizabeth Marie, Alexandria Marie, Daniella Marie and Jonathan Bernard Shumaker; Brittany Lee, Zachary Taylor , Gregory Jordan, Bradley Adam , Mitchell William and Madison Raeann Bilek; sister Sue Anne Holaday and a brother John Edwin Shumaker.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister Jane.
A funeral mass will be celebrated on Saturday, January 30, 2021 at 10:30 AM at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, Elgin. Inurnment will be on Saturday, February 6, 2021 at 11:00 AM St. Joseph Cemetery, Upper Sandusky, OH. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Elgin Knights of Columbus Council 654, PO Box 1427, Elgin, IL 60120. Laird Funeral Home, Elgin is assisting the family.
